The way out starts before you touch any settings. Start by asking what decision each metric is supposed to support.

When every group uses the same positional logic (trend top-left, absolute number top-right, breakdown below), your eye knows where to land before your brain has finished reading. Tableau’s own best-practices guidance caps readable dashboards at two to three views for exactly this reason, and Smashing Magazine’s UX research suggests limiting visible elements to around five per surface to preserve scannability.

Drill paths close the loop. Instead of building a single long dashboard that requires scrolling to reach detail, Tableau’s “Go to Sheet” navigation actions let a click take you from a summary metric to the underlying breakdown. You can also configure a view to act as a filter: selecting a bar or a region updates every other view on the dashboard without touching a filter panel. The interaction turns scrolling into a deliberate choice about where you want to go.

Iterate by subtraction, not by rearrangement. Moving clutter around doesn’t reduce it. For any field, label, or filter that survived your original build, ask whether removing it would actually cost you an insight or just the comfort of having it there. Unused data sources and worksheets left attached to a view also add to query complexity and slow load times, so stripping them out improves both the visual experience and the speed of every interaction. Filters deserve specific scrutiny. Excessive filters don’t just crowd the layout, they generate more complex queries and push response times up.
